What Makes a Nursing Bra Different From a Regular Bra?

A regular bra is made for a body that stays the same size. A maternity bra is made for one that doesn’t. Your cup size can go up by one or two sizes during pregnancy, and change again within days once your milk comes in. Your ribcage widens too, so the band needs room to adjust.

A feeding bra adds one more thing: a cup that opens. In a regular bra, feeding means pushing the cup up or pulling it to one side. You end up holding it out of the way with one hand while you hold your baby with the other, often hunched over in an awkward position. When your baby is hungry at 2 am, that’s the last thing you need. A nursing bra has a flap that opens just enough for your baby to latch on, while the rest of the bra stays in place and keeps you covered and supported. Once the feed is done, you simply close the flap again.

How to Choose the Right Maternity Bra Size

Don’t go by your old size. Measure again. Wrap a measuring tape snugly around your ribcage, just under your breasts, for the band. Then measure around the fullest part of your bust for the cup. Do it in the evening, when your breasts are usually at their fullest.

If you’re buying during pregnancy, pick a bra that fits comfortably on the tightest hook. As your ribcage expands over the coming weeks, you can move to the looser hooks. Most moms buy a nursing bra around the 36th week, because by then the size is closer to what you’ll need after delivery. Keep in mind that your breasts may feel fuller for the first few days after your milk comes in, so leave a little room in the cups.

If you’re between two sizes, go for the bigger one. A slightly loose bra is much easier to live with than one that’s too tight.
